PAMPANGA, PHILIPPINES – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 has launched an investigation into a purportedly E-Sabong operation in Central Luzon, as viral videos circulating on social media have garnered attention.
According to Lt. Gen. Rhodel Sermonia, the PNP Deputy Chief for Administration, authorities are working to identify the individuals behind these controversial videos.
In an interview with NewsLine Central Luzon during his visit to the Police Regional Office 3, Lt. Gen. Sermonia revealed that their office is currently gathering information about the videos. Potential penalties or charges for neglecting duty to combat illegal online cockfighting are being deliberated for officials such as Chiefs of Police and Commanders.
Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. issued a directive to halt E-Sabong operations, responding to reports of a resurgence in illegal online cockfighting. E-Sabong is a form of gambling that not only contributes to criminal activity but also raises various societal concerns.
Based on PNP data from July 1, 2022 to August 15, 2023, a total of 328 individuals in Central Luzon have been arrested for their involvement in illegal E-Sabong or online cockfighting.
